Discoverer of Titanic to tell own tale

Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic, will describe his deep-sea adventures for the public during a presentation at UC Davis on Wednesday, Feb. 11. He will hold a news conference before he speaks. In addition to leading the expedition that found the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, Ballard discovered the German battleship Bismarck and 11 warships from the lost fleet of Guadalcanal. He is now president of the Institute for Exploration in Connecticut and scientist emeritus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. A pioneer in the development of technology for deep-water exploration, he has led or participated in about 100 deep-sea expeditions. These include the first manned explorations of the Mid-Oceanic Ridge, and the discovery of the Galapagos Rift's warm water springs and their unique animal communities. Co-creator of the NBC drama "seaQuest DSV," Ballard has written best sellers about his discoveries, a novel, a children's book and an autobiography. Ballard's news conference will begin at 7:15 p.m., and his presentation, at 8 p.m., both in Freeborn Hall. His talk is sponsored by ASUCD Student Forums.
