A video documentary on the experiences of women who had abortions prior to their legalization will be shown at noon Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the University of California, Davis.
"Illegal Abortions: Untold Stories" will be shown in MU II of the Memorial Union. The showing is presented by the Women's Resources and Research Center (WRRC).
Following the video, a discussion on the subject will be facilitated by Carole Joffe, a UC Davis professor of sociology and women's studies. The program is free and open to the public.
The video depicts the emotional pain and physical danger experienced by women who had illegal abortions in the decades prior to Roe vs. Wade, the 1972 U.S. Supreme Court decision that made abortions legal. In addition to the women's descriptions of their experiences, the video also features the stories of the doctors and other people who helped women who had "back alley" and self-induced abortions.
"An entire generation of women has come of age with the assumption that reproductive choice is a fundamental right," said Diane Adams, WRRC program coordinator. "Recent Supreme Court decisions have eroded that right. With reproductive rights so much a part of the current political landscape and in a key election year for women, it is important to look to history to gain perspective on the future."
