Dog Fun Day Aims to Save Pound Pups

What: To raise funds for training dogs rescued from animal shelters, the Canine Medicine Club from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is sponsoring a public Dog Fun Day. The event will include a variety of lively, lighthearted activities for dogs and their human companions, a canine photo contest and a "Canine Good Citizen Test." Dogs of all types -- purebred and mixed breeds -- will participate. When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 Where: Memorial Union Quad, UC Davis Visuals: Contests include newspaper fetching, longest and loudest barking, Frisbee catching, tire jumping, ball retrieval, longest crawl, and best and stupidest dog tricks. Dogs and humans will "bob" for toys or apples in a bucket. Prizes also will be awarded for best dog costumes, best owner look-alike and a range of other superlatives ranging from hairiest to ugliest dog. Dogs also will be put through their paces to see if they can pass the American Kennel Club's "Canine Good Citizen Test." In addition there will be a toe-nail trimming booth for dogs and a dog-bandanna decorating booth, plus information and service booths. Background: Entry fees, ranging from $1 to $3 for each contest or $8 per dog for the good-citizen test, and donations for raffle tickets will go to support the Shelter Dog Rescue Program. In the program, dogs with minor behavior problems are claimed by the UC Davis Canine Medicine Club, put in temporary foster homes with 4-H students who provide care and corrective training, then placed with a permanent owner. The program serves Yolo, Solano and Sacramento counties. Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80 take Highway 113 North toward Woodland.
