Weeds: they've been called "resident vegetation" and "highly adapted wildflowers." But no matter what you call them, when they're in the middle of your cash crop, they're bad news. How does one get rid of weeds while keeping friendly relations with the environment? The answer can be found in "Cultural Weed Control in Vegetable Crops," a new video funded by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. It offers solutions to growers interested both in getting rid of weeds and reducing herbicide use. The video was produced by Tom Lanini, of UC Davis Botany Extension and UC Visual Media, and co-written and narrated by Robert Bugg, SAREP pest management and cover crop analyst. The narration explains why and how certain organic farming practices work. The video includes two versions of the same information, including a lighthearted "down-home" style reminiscent of Walter Brennan.
