Down-Home Video Describes 'Friendly' Weed Control

Weeds: they've been called "resident vegetation" and "highly adapted wildflowers." But no matter what you call them, whenthey're in the middle of your cash crop, they're bad news. How does one get rid of weeds while maintaining friendly relations with the environment? The answer can be found in "Cultural Weed Control in Vegetable Crops," a new video funded by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. The video, which offers solutions to growers interested in getting rid of weeds and reducing herbicide use, was produced by Tom Lanini, a UC Davis Cooperative Extension botany specialist, and UC Visual Media. It was co-written and narrated by Robert Bugg, SAREP pest management and cover crop analyst. The video explains why and how certain organic farming practices work and is narrated in two versions, one including a light-hearted "down-home" style reminiscent of Walter Brennan.
