A draft report on the potential environmental effects of a new academic building called the Eichhorn Family House at the University of California, Davis, is available for public review and comment.
The site for the Eichhorn Family House is on the central campus within the Center for Child and Family Studies complex, south of First Street and west of Aggie Village. The proposal is to build a one-story, 2,690-square-foot building, similar in design to the Aggie Village homes. It would be situated south of the existing center buildings and north of the arboretum.
The new building will allow the center, part of the UC Davis Department of Human and Community Development, to develop experimental programs for children and families through its laboratory. Although parents and other family members have always been an essential component of the center, space limitations have not permitted formal development of such family-centered research activities.
Accommodating 20 to 30 people, the Eichhorn lab would include a fireplace room, a library, demonstration area, kitchen and eating area, office space, and restroom and utility rooms. Central to research would be an observation room with one-way windows for observing activities in the "Sand Tray" and "Wait, Watch and Wonder" rooms. The Sand Tray Room would be used for teaching and research activities, while the Wait, Watch and Wonder Room would accommodate couples, children, specialists and students involved in research activities relating to parenting, child development and family communication.
The Eichhorn Family House is being funded through a private donation.
The proposed project is consistent with the land-use designations of the 1994 Long Range Development Plan. The draft study found that most of the potential environmental impacts would be mitigated by measures described in the environmental impact report (EIR) for the LRDP, as updated and amended to date. The draft study sets out mitigation measures for the additional impacts.
Copies of the study are available at: the reserve desk of the Shields Library on the UC Davis campus; the Yolo County Public Library, 315 East 14th St., Davis; the Vacaville Public Library, 1020 Ulatis Drive, Vacaville; and on the Web at .
Written comments on the draft study can be submitted up to 5 p.m. on April 27. Comments should be addressed to John Meyer, Office of Resource Management and Planning, UC Davis.
