"Eating Disorders in a Disordered Culture," the opening of which coincides with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, is a visual arts project that explores the personal, cultural and historical dimensions of eating disorders. The multifaceted project is designed for three venues: gallery exhibition, public art spaces such as billboards and bus shelters, and cyberspace.
The exhibit provides a visual expression of the experience of eating disorders by combining textual narratives with powerful visual imagery in order to convey both the personal experience and the cultural pervasiveness of eating disorders.
The narratives and images appear in posters, prints and etched plates. The gallery exhibition also includes a "secret appetites" dining table installation. At the table, visitors can listen to a compact disc recording of authentic descriptions from women and men detailing their experiences with eating disorders.
Designed to be interactive, the exhibit also includes a Web site that not only displays the images from the exhibit and contains a resource guide on the subject, but also provides a space for people to incorporate their own stories of eating disorders.
The exhibit previously has been shown at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, the Channing Peake Arts Commission Gallery in Santa Barbara and the Fairfield (California) Center Gallery.
Public art showings have included a 14' x 48' billboard on Interstate 80 during November and December 1998, interior bus posters in Fairfield and Santa Barbara, and bus shelter posters in Santa Clara and San Jose, Calif.
The exhibit's artists are Robin Lasser, assistant professor and coordinator of the photography program at San Jose State University, and Kathryn Sylva, an assistant design professor at UC Davis.
