Edible Art Gives Food for Thought

A burnt-toast-news photo mural, a hen's nest of egg bread and egg noodles, and a couch literally made of potatoes are just a few elements of "You Art What You Eat: Installations of Edible Media," a new exhibition at the UC Davis Design Gallery. Gallery director Dolph Gotelli invited nine Northern California artists, two of whom are UC Davis graduates, to participate in creating environments of edible media. "Reality Knocks at the Gate of Dreams" by Reetah Szuszkiewicz is made entirely of recycled or surplus materials. It's a copper-wire dream tree festooned with dyed rice paper flowers and Chinese pastry cookies, separated by a metal net from a floor of rice and a stark black and white photo of a boy in El Salvador, bloated with hunger. Because rice is the staple food in many countries, Szuszkiewicz says it was fitting to use that media as the reality part of her installation. "A Mother Hen's Nightmare" by Be Herrera utilizes a two-year collection of wishbones and a handmade eggbread hen fashioned after a white leghorn chicken. The exhibit opens Feb. 26 and continues through March 22, noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 2-5 p.m. Sundays, and is closed Saturdays and holidays. It is located at 145 Walker Hall and is free and open to the public.
