Egg-Drop Contest Serves Up Sunny Side of Engineering

What: Throwing raw eggs off a five-story building doesn't always mean a messy splatter of yolks and egg whites. For the past 18 years, a UC Davis student engineering organization, the Materials Society, has sponsored an egg-drop contest to show that engineering can be fun. Contestants design small, light vehicles to protect fragile eggshells from the impact. The egg "cartons" are judged for design (creativity and materials), weight (the lighter the better), and aim (hitting a target drawn on the cement). The event attracts hundreds of community participants, including elementary, junior-high and high-school students from as far away as the San Francisco Bay Area. When: Friday, Feb. 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasting several hours Where: UC Davis Physics/Geology Building, front steps Visuals: From the ground and the roof, news cameras can capture the successful and scrambled attempts to hit the target. In previous years, eggs have been tucked in foam footballs, padded boxes, parachutes, a rubber chicken and even a rag doll. Parking From Interstate 80 take the UC Davis exit. Turn north on Old and Directions: Davis Road. At stop sign, go straight and continue straight to the Hog Barn. Park against the north or south fence of the Hog Barn. Do not block the barn doors or loading chutes. For limited additional short-term parking, drive past the Hog Barn and turn right down into the Physics/Geology building loading area. Media may park on campus in most places for free if they leave a business card on the dashboard.
