What: Egged on by the Materials Society student group, more than 100 people of all ages will throw raw, Grade A large eggs from the roof of the UC Davis Physics/Geology Building to a target five stories below. Traveling in small, light vehicles designed to protect their fragile shells, the dozens of potential Humpty Dumptys help celebrate National Engineers Week.
In the Egg Drop Challenge, points are awarded for weight, accuracy, design and egg survivability. In previous years, eggs have been tucked in foam footballs, padded boxes, maple-seed-like vessels, parachutes, soft-spike-padded spheres, a rubber chicken and even a rag doll. The winner of the $50 first prize will be announced Saturday.
When: Friday, Feb. 24, all day
Contestants: 9:30 a.m. Will C. Wood High School students, Vacaville
10:30 a.m. Valley Oak Elementary students, Davis
11 a.m. Emerson Junior High students, Davis
Noon UC Davis students and other open category competitors
3 p.m. Emerson Junior High students
Where: UC Davis Physics/Geology Building, front steps
Visuals: From the ground and the roof, cameras can capture the successful and unsuccessful attempts to hit the target with the weird and wonderful vehicles people invent to protect their eggs from so much as a crack.
Other Visuals: This year, the campus offers additional egg visuals: Arneson's Eggheads, a series of five sculptures by the late Robert Arneson, who taught in the campus's art department for nearly 30 years and is widely credited with elevating ceramic sculptures as a serious art form and inspiring the funk art movement. See the attached map.
Directions and Parking: From Sacramento and Vacaville, take the UC Davis exit off I-80. Turn north on Old Davis Road. At stop sign, go straight and continue straight to the Hog Barn. Park against the north or the south fence of the Hog Barn. Do not block the barn doors or loading chutes. For limited additional short-term parking, drive past the Hog Barn and turn right down into the Physics/Geology loading area. Media may park on campus in most places for free if they leave a business card on the dashboard.
