Once a year, dozens of potential Humpty Dumptys are thrown fromthe roof of the UC Davis Physics/Geology building to a target fivestories below to help celebrate National Engineers Week. Allcontestants are welcome in the fifth annual Egg Drop Challenge to design and drop small, light vehicles that can protect a raw Grade A large egg. This year's contest, sponsored by the student group the Materials Society, begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, and a winner is expected to be announced shortly after the competition ends about 1 p.m. Points are awarded for design, materials and originality. Eggs have been tucked in rockets, parachutes, foam footballs, padded boxes, maple-seed-like vessels and even a rag doll. A national student outreach effort, E-Week strives to improve public understanding and appreciation of engineers and their contributions. UC Davis student engineering groups have planned a packed week of activities for Feb. 16-19 that include clocking the speeds of baseball throws, running an engine without oil until its catastrophic failure, demonstrating human-powered vehicles and visiting with faculty and students. For a full schedule of the week's activities, contact John Holmes, chair of the organization that oversees student engineering groups on campus, at (916) 752-0553 or 758-3441.
