Entries are being sought for a national juried exhibition of masks to be held at the Design Gallery at the University of California, Davis.
The exhibition is the first in an annual, national design competition sponsored by the Design Alliance, a group that works to generate private support and resources for the gallery.
Titled "Face the Nation," the exhibition will feature masks selected by juror Katherine Westphal, a professor emeritus of design at UC Davis whose textile and fiber art work has been shown around the world. Her creations have been included in exhibitions in Tokyo, Switzerland, Rome, New York, Washington, D.C., and London. She has been the subject of one-artist exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York and the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum. Westphal's works are in the permanent collections of the American Craft Museum in New York, the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $100 will be awarded for first, second and third place. Masks also may be made available for sale.
The exhibition is open to all artists living in the United States. Masks may be constructed in any medium, but there are size limitations, and they must have been completed within the past two years.
"Face the Nation" will be on display from Feb. 21 to March 19, 1993 in the Design Gallery. The deadline for submission of entries is Nov. 30, 1992.
