Etiquette workshop on menu for biz professionals

Business professionals in the capital area will have their plates full with eating and greeting of a different sort Friday, Feb. 20. At least 50 managers in the region's top 25 companies who are concurrently working toward an M.B.A. at UC Davis will attend the Graduate School of Management's annual business etiquette workshop -- a popular offering. Shirley Willey of Etiquette & Company, who will lead the workshop, says dining faux pas that distract and detract can be expensive, since about 75 percent of business is negotiated over food. "You're not there to eat. You're there to develop a relationship, put a deal together, get a job or win a promotion." Workshop participants will network at a reception with hors d'oeuvres and beverages, eat a four-course dinner and, during the meal, discuss six case studies in business etiquette. Highlighting the 20 most common failings in business etiquette, Willey's presentation will also cover proper introductions, body language and communication by e-mail and facsimile. The theme of this year's workshop is civility. "Putting Your Best Foot and Fork Forward" will be held in the ballroom of the Radisson Hotel at Highway 160 and Canterbury Road. The reception will begin at 5 p.m., with the etiquette presentation following at 6 p.m. and dinner, at 7:30 p.m.
