Business must replace the organizational chart with a constellation map, according to the managing director of an international strategy consulting firm speaking in Sacramento Wednesday, April 14.
Thomas J. Tierney of Bain & Company, based in Boston, will discuss a new approach to organizational leadership at a breakfast meeting organized by the UC Davis Graduate School of Management.
In a speech titled "Constellation Leadership for Competitive Advantage," the UC Davis graduate will challenge area business leaders to organize their companies around talent instead of positions.
Modeling itself after a constellation of stars pulled together by gravity and pushed out by rotation, Tierney says, an organization should create the forces that unite its star talent around its strategy and purpose and that propel those stars outward on entrepreneurial ventures. Companies can win in their markets by better mobilizing star employees to implement strategy, he adds.
"There is tremendous competition for top talent," Tierney says. "Star wars are today's reality, and competitive advantage goes to the firm that can win and motivate the brightest stars."
He will address members of the school's Business Partners program, and media are invited to cover the by-invitation-only event. The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. with Tierney speaking shortly after 8 a.m. It will be held at the Sterling Hotel at H and 13th streets in Sacramento.
