What's it like to discover a 69 million-year-old dinosaur in the desert? To collect an orchid completely new to science? For 20 years, these experiences, and countless more adventures, were had by members of more than 1,000 research expedition teams. Volunteers from ages 16 to 80 have explored the four corners of the globe through UC's University Research Expedition Program, assisting scientists in the field with their time and money. Past expedition leader Kent Weeks, recent discoverer of the Tomb of the Fifty Sons of Ramses II in Egypt, will lead off an all-day symposium on Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Valley Life Sciences Building, UC Berkeley. The public is invited to the anniversary celebration, $15 or $20 at the door, and to join moderator Jerry
Kay, host of the radio program EarthNews, as scientists present firsthand reports of the latest fruits of their investigations. UC Davis researchers will discuss resource use in ancient Greece, the cloud forests of the Andes, the wetlands of Belize, African roots of Carnaval, Bolivian textiles, and pelicans of California and Baja.
