Made from a wide variety of materials including wood, cigarette butts, peacock feathers and leather, the 57 masks in the UC Davis Design Gallery's third "Face the Nation" competition exhibit styles ranging from whimsical to haunting.
Among the masks in this year's display are those titled "Zipperhead," "Mom's Death Mask," "Spider Woman," "Put on a Happy Face" and "Bad Hair Day."
The masks in the exhibition were selected in a juried competition. Jurors were Sam Carter, on the faculty of the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Nance O'Brien, professor at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Carter is an international curator and exhibition designer, and O'Brien is an internationally recognized textile, paper and book artist.
Mask competition rules mandate that the masks measure no more than two feet in height, width and depth, and that the masks are wearable. The competition is open to artists of all ages.
At the opening reception, mask making will be available to children and adults during the gallery's "Funny Faces" workshop. Supplies will be provided.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Design Alliance, a support group for the Design Gallery.
