Fact Sheet: Recreation Pool Rescue

Lifeguards rescued a student who came close to drowning yesterday at the campus recreation pool. An emergency response team called to the scene delivered the student to the emergency room of Sutter Davis Hospital. He later was transferred to Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento where he was reported to be in good condition this morning and a hospital source says he will be released later today. UC Davis Fire and ambulance crews arrived at 3:11 p.m. at the pool area moments after lifeguards removed the young man from the pool. The 17-year-old began breathing on his own after CPR was administered. The emergency medical crews also used supplemental oxygen, and they aspirated water from his lungs while en route to the hospital. The student was with a group of newly enrolled students who had decided to go swimming at the pool, located west of Recreation Hall. Lifeguards reported that approximately 15 people were in the pool at the time of the accident. "When the lifeguards spotted the victim under water they activated their emergency plan, worked as a team and did what they were trained to do," said Dennis Johnson, supervisor of the pool.
