Family Farm Conference

Winter is "conference season" for many California farmers. While large-scale producers go to farm equipment shows throughout the state, many small-scale farmers and direct marketers head off to the UC co-sponsored "Farm Conference." Marking its 10th anniversary this year, the conference will be held Feb. 11-14 at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. It is co-sponsored by the UC Davis-based Small Farm Center. Focusing on family farming, direct marketing and agricultural sustainability, this year's conference speakers include Jim Hightower, former Texas state agriculture commissioner, and holistic resource management advocate Allan Savory. Both are recognized as dynamic speakers who challenge the status quo of conventional agriculture. The conference will also include tours to the San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market, horticultural nurseries, fruit and vegetable operations, and a successful abalone farm, as well as a trade show, a regional food and wine tasting and dozens of educational activities.
