Field Day to Tackle Problems Facing Rice Growers

Rice straw management and weed control will be two major topics of concern as approximately 500 rice growers and UC scientists gather Aug. 30 for the annual field day at the Rice Experiment Station near Biggs, Calif. Four years ago the California rice industry's most popular and effective herbicide, Londax®, appeared to be losing some of its punch as resistant varieties of several broadleaf weeds began to appear. The problem has grown exponentially from four fields that first year to more than 4,000 last year. UC scientists have been experimenting with new ways of coping with the situation and will report their findings at the field day. Also of major interest will be reports from studies monitoring different techniques growers have been using to incorporate straw into their fields. Researchers also will discuss development of new rice varieties, insect management and other production issues. Poster displays and straw incorporation equipment will be featured.
