Fight Back!

Women at UC Davis are learning street fighting techniques rather than martial arts in order to learn how to fight back against sexual assault. One rape and five attempted rapes were reported on the Davis campus last year, according to Jennifer Beeman, rape prevention and education coordinator at UC Davis. "These courses are designed to promote assertiveness in women and to educate them to be less vulnerable to situations where assault might occur," says Beeman. "The seven-week courses are popular among the students and staff at UC Davis, because they give participants more options to avoid assault." The course will be taught by Karla Grant, an expert in training women to defend themselves both physically and psychologically. Classes are taught on campus each week on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
