Many of California's top leaders in academia, industry and government will gather May 28-29 in Sacramento for the California Coalition for Science and Technology Summit. Coordinated by the University of California, the conference aims to improve support for science and technology in the state and to develop new and effective partnerships in problem-solving and in new economic enterprises. Speakers include UC President Richard Atkinson, who will provide the opening keynote address; UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, who will lead one of the regional sessions; Neal Lane, director of the National Science Foundation; Ernest Moniz, associate director for science in the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy; as well as top officials with leading companies such as Chiron Corp., Pacific Gas & Electric and Hewlett Packard. In addition, M.R.C. Greenwood, dean of graduate studies and vice provost for academic outreach at UC Davis, and Theodore Saenger, retired chief executive officer for Pacific Bell, are scheduled to release the results of a new poll that assesses the attitudes and opinions of Californians toward research.
