Firefighters to Practice Rescues From Confined Spaces

What: About 35 firefighters from seven area fire departments, including 20 firefighters from UC Davis, will train in techniques for rescues in confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, silos and pits. Capt. Kent Freeman of the Roseville Fire Department will be the lead instructor for the training, offered by the Industrial Emergency Council. News media are welcome to attend the training exercises. When and Where: Monday through Friday, November 9-13. The training, including exercises beginning after 1 p.m. Wednesday, will take place at the UC Davis Fire and Police Building and elsewhere on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Visuals: • Wednesday, 1-5 p.m.: exercises in rescues from manholes near the Fire and Police Building. • Thursday, all day, concurrent exercises in rescues from an auger truck, a grain silo and pipes. Please call for directions to the on-campus location. • Friday, all day, exercises in rescues from a multistory shaft in the Life Sciences Addition, at Hutchison and Kleiber Hall drives, and from pipes near the building. Please call to arrange access to the building's roof. Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80 take Highway 113 north and exit onto Hutchison Drive east. Stay on Hutchison Drive and cross La Rue Road. Turn left at Kleiber Hall Drive. The Fire and Police Building is on the left. Parking is available in Lot 41 off Hutchison Drive; the entrance is directly across from Kleiber Hall Drive. Leave a media business card on your dashboard as a parking permit, unless your vehicle is already marked.
