What: Thomas Dutton, the cornerstone of student services at the University of California, Davis, as vice chancellor of Student Affairs from 1970 to 1991, will tour a new student services building to be named in his honor.
When: 10 a.m. Thursday, April 1
Please note that the gate for central campus access will not allow vehicles to pass between 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. due to heavy pedestrian traffic.
Where: Thomas B. Dutton Hall, UC Davis
Visuals: Wearing a hard hat, Thomas Dutton will tour the $9 million building with his wife, Eina; Carol Wall, vice chancellor for Student Affairs; Bob Franks, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs; Allen Lowry, the campus project manager for the building; and Kate Scott, director of design services for Student Affairs.
The shingled, three-story building reflects the style of North and South halls and the Silo -- some of the oldest buildings on campus. It features a glass entry, a dramatic two-story lobby and an outdoor pedestrian plaza with ornamental trees, seating and a fountain.
Background: Thomas B. Dutton Hall is the first building on campus designed to bring together an array of student services. The 45,000 gross-square-foot building will house the Financial Aid Office, Student Aid Accounting, the Cashier's Office, the Learning Skills Center, the Student Employment Center, Outreach Services and Student Judicial Affairs.
The building was designed by Fisher-Friedman Associates and built by Barnes Construction, both of San Francisco. Construction began in October 1997, and departments will take occupancy beginning in late April. The official opening and dedication will be held during next fall's Homecoming.
Dutton was the first full-time administrator to serve as vice chancellor of Student Affairs. During his 21-year tenure, he integrated existing student services into an effective organization and developed programs to meet the growing needs of the student body, which became increasingly diversified as it expanded from 13,350 to 23,300 students.
UC Davis' Student Affairs program was one of 14 in the United States chosen as a model for the 1991 study "Involving Colleges: Successful Approaches to Fostering Student Learning and Development Outside the Classroom." In 1976, Dutton was honored by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators for his outstanding performance as a student affairs administrator.
