Former Prime Minister of Lithuania to Visit UC Davis Relations

WHAT: Kazimiera-Danute Prunskiene, the former prime minister of Lithuania, will visit UC Davis to address a political science class in international relations. She will be available to reporters before the class, which reporters may attend. WHEN: Prunskiene will meet with reporters at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3. Her address to the international relations class will follow at 2 p.m. WHERE: Prunskiene will be available to reporters in the Garrison Room of the Memorial Union. The international relations class is held in Room 198 of Young Hall. Both buildings are located in the central part of the campus. PARKING: Parking Lot 11 is the lot closest to the Memorial Union and Young Hall. It is located west of A Street between Second and Third streets. Media may park without charge by placing a business card on the dashboard. COMMENTS: In March 1990, Prunskiene became the first freely elected public official in Lithuania in 50 years. One of the primary figures in Lithuania's drive toward independence from the Soviet Union, Prunskiene resigned her post less than two years later, in January 1991. A strong free-market advocate, Prunskiene resigned after the Baltic republic's legislature rejected her economic reform package, and after she disagreed with President Vytautas Landsbergis over the country's stance toward the Soviet central government. At the time of her resignation, public opinion polls showed Prunskiene to be the most popular politician in Lithuania.
