What: Hoping to connect under happier circumstances with 15-20 former patients and their owners, the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital's Intensive Care Unit is hosting an "ICU Reunion."
When: 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, March 10
Where: Room 2240, second floor, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, UC Davis
Background: The Intensive Care Unit, located in the small-animal clinic of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, primarily treats dogs and cats. These patients may have recently undergone surgery or been hit by an automobile, injured in a dogfight or afflicted with a life-threatening illness. The average stay in the small-animal ICU is 5-7 days, during which the animals are cared for by a team of veterinarians, veterinary students and animal health technicians.
"We're looking forward to visiting with clients who probably were last here under very trying circumstances," said Karl Jandrey, an emergency and critical-care veterinarian at the teaching hospital. "The reunion will provide the opportunity for us to follow up on our patients, some of whom were just puppies when they were in the ICU. It will give those of us who work in the ICU the opportunity to witness the impact of what we do. We hope it will also provide closure for some of our clients."
Visuals: Veterinarians and veterinary students will be checking over their former patients and chatting with the pet owners. Tours of the ICU will be available.
Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80 take Highway 113 north toward Woodland. Exit to the right onto Hutchison Drive and continue to the first stoplight. At the light, turn right onto La Rue Road, then turn right onto Garrod Drive. At the first stop sign, turn right onto Veterinary Medicine Drive and park in Lot 50 on your left. The teaching hospital is the two-story building immediately west of the parking lot. Parking is free on weekends.
