Gardening Treasures Offered in Special Sale

A gardener's paradise awaits those who come to UC Davis Saturday, Oct. 7, when more than 1,000 kinds of plants will be available to anyone wishing to add new garden treasures to their yard. Hundreds of volunteer workers have spent thousands of hours propagating, watering and nurturing uncommon plants for this year's 21st annual Plant Faire. The team of garden experts strives to introduce new, hardy plants that will thrive in Central Valley environmental conditions, according to Ellen Zagory, nursery manager of the University Arboretum. "Fall is the best time for planting perennials in the valley and our selection of choice perennials is unrivaled." On hand will be many one-of-a-kind plants such as native shrubs, bulbs, grasses, vines, perennials, shade trees and house plants that will be available at the fund-raising sale, which begins at 8 a.m. at the arboretum headquarters, near the intersection of La Rue Road and California Avenue. The University Arboretum is one of the richest historical museums in Northern California with more than 2,000 varieties of trees and plants covering more than 150 acres along a two-mile stretch of Putah Creek.
