Gary Snyder, Bei Dao to Read From Their Poetry

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and UC Davis faculty member Gary Snyder and Chinese poet Bei Dao, Nobel Prize finalist, will give an evening reading of their works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Kleiber Hall on campus. Snyder is acclaimed for his poetry about his early experiences in the mountains of the West. He is a member of the "Beat" generation of poets. Bei Dao is a visiting professor at UC Davis; he teaches advanced Chinese language and Chinese poetry classes. He has been denied entrance to China since 1989 -- and has lived in seven different countries during the past six years. Bei Dao's poetry does not make overt political statements; rather, his work transcends a particular place or time. Still, his poems were considered subversive in his homeland of China. The reading is free and open to the public.
