Geography Student Wins Susan F. Regan Award

Molly M. Pohl, a geography major at the University of California, Davis, has been selected to receive the 1992 Susan F. Regan Prize, awarded annually to one or more graduating senior women who have compiled a superior academic record and demonstrated service and loyalty to the campus. The award, which includes a $2,000 stipend, was established by the UC Davis chapter of the Prytanean Undergraduate Women's Honor Society in memory of the campus's first dean of women. The recipient must have "demonstrated the ability and desire to continue shaping and maintaining the highest of ideals" and have earned a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75. Marti Hanna, associate dean of students and adviser to the Prytanean Society, said, "Susan Regan would undoubtedly have stood in awe of Molly, a woman of uncommon depth, breadth of interests, talent, ideals and academic credentials." Pohl is the daughter of Lt. Col. Stephen E. Pohl of Atwater, Calif., and Carol Schwennesen of Vashon Island, Wash. She will graduate Phi Beta Kappa in June with a bachelor's degree in geography. In fall 1990, Pohl became the first student to serve in the newly created position of undergraduate representative for the geography department. She is credited with helping the geography faculty become more informed about and mindful of undergraduates in the department's decision-making process. As a research assistant under Deborah Elliott-Fisk, a UC Davis professor of geography, Pohl has conducted research on a Quaternary history of the Sierra Nevada and White Mountain ranges, and a soil history and assessment for Napa Valley winegrowers. During spring quarter, she is serving as a volunteer teaching assistant for a field course in physical geography. Pohl received departmental citations for undergraduate accomplishment in 1991 and 1992.
