Getting cows 'in sync' with nature

To help California ranchers get their cows in sync with nature, an expert in beef cattle nutrition will show ranchers Oct. 26 how to better tap natural resources. "Nature provides forage, the seasons and cows, and when ranchers learn to use them in concert, calves are produced at low cost," according to UC Cooperative Extension farm advisor Roger Ingram. He and farm advisor Dave Pratt are coordinating the ranching seminar and open house at the UC Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center in Browns Valley. It will feature beef cattle nutrition expert Dick Diven. Ingram and Pratt will also talk about the UC Controlled Grazing Research and Extension Project, which they coordinate. Funded in part by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, the project is a study of controlled grazing on foothill annual rangeland and irrigated pasture, and the impact of spring calving. Hands-on activities will be featured during the open house.
