Charles R. Goldman, an internationally recognized lake ecologist, will deliver a free public lecture titled "From Pole to Pole: Lakes as Reservoirs of History, Eyewitness for the Planet" on Monday, April 12. The Faculty Research Lecture will begin at 8 p.m. in the UC Davis Main Theatre. Professor and chair of the environmental studies division at UC Davis, Goldman has devoted his career to studying the effects of environmental pollutants on lake ecology. Much of his work has focused on Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada, and the factors contributing to the decline of the popular resort lake's clarity. His research has also taken him to every continent on the globe. He has led several expeditions to Russia's Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world, and a glacier in Antarctica has been named in his honor. His effectiveness in translating his research into public service and social action was recently recognized when Goldman received the campus's 1993 Distinguished Public Service Award.
