Building local leadership, fortifying local government and strengthening local economies are the goals of the new UC Davis California Communities Program. It will emphasize collaborative work with other programs, both within and outside UC, according to director David Campbell. "We see this as a great opportunity to focus the knowledge and resources of the university on public service that meets the needs of local communities." Campbell, who also works as the community development and public policy analyst at the UC Davis-based statewide Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, hopes to expand on his work linking sustainable agriculture to community economic development. The California Communities Program is a Cooperative Extension program within the UC Davis human and community development department.
