Gorman Museum Exhibit Remembers Native Artist David Ipiña

Exhibition title: David Ipiña Memorial Exhibit Dates: Jan. 18 through April 7 Where: Carl Gorman Museum 1316 Hart Hall University of California, Davis Hours: Noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday (and by appointment) Artists' reception: 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 19 A memorial exhibit for artist David Ipiña, a well-known Native American artist from the Sacramento area who passed away in 1998, will open the Gorman Museum's new year. The exhibit will consist of works contributed by 18 artists, including Brian Tripp, Jean LaMarr and Hulleah Tsinhahjinnie. Each artist will contribute one piece to the show, honoring the memory of David. A member of the Yurok tribe, David Ipiña worked as a multimedia artist and as a poet and writer. He traveled throughout California and beyond to share and sell his art, becoming a notable member of the Californian Native American community. The exhibition is supported by the Department of Native American Studies, the California Arts Council's Multi-Cultural Entry Grant Program and individual contributions. The Carl Gorman Museum is named in honor of co-founding Native American Studies faculty member Carl Gorman and is housed within the Native American studies department.
