The C.N. Gorman Museum will be the final stop for "Ancestral Memories: A Tribute to Native Survival," an exhibition that has been traveling across the country for two years. The exhibition consists of commissioned pieces by 10 Native American artists. The artists' works honor the lives of Native American elders who enabled the continuance of native cultures and peoples to the 21st century.
The exhibition was co-curated by Carrie Lederer and Theresa Harlan of the UC Davis Native American studies department. In the past two years, the collection of works has been installed in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian and at galleries across Northern California.
The exhibition is supported by the Native American Studies Department, California Arts Council and the Women's Resources and Research Center at UC Davis. Catalogues containing statements from the artists in the show will be available for sale.
Public events will be scheduled during the exhibition period. For more information about the activities, call the museum at (916) 752-6567.
The C. N. Gorman Museum is part of the Native American studies department and is dedicated to Native American and other artists whose works address cultural, social and political issues of the Americas.
