Lindstrom of Stockton, a candidate for a bachelor of science degree in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. Lindstrom holds a nearly perfect grade-point average of 3.98 for all work completed at UC Davis. Lindstrom has been a UC Regent Scholar, an academic All-American in cross country twice and a recipient of numerous scholarships. • The College of Engineering Medal will go to Richard J. St. John of San Francisco. He is a candidate for a bachelor of science degree in chemical and biochemical engineering. He has maintained a 3.91 grade-point average over five years at UC Davis. Through the 1995 winter quarter, St. John has received eight "A+" grades and 42 "A's." After graduation, St. John will attend graduate school and pursue a Ph.D. in chemical engineering with an emphasis on biochemical processes. His career plan is to work as a research and development engineer in biotechnology. • The V. Glenn Winslow Jr. Award, given to the most outstanding graduating man, will be presented to Ryan J. Jones of Taft, a candidate for a bachelor of arts degree in history and English. Jones received the award for his service and leadership in university and community activities as well as excellent scholarship. Ryan has maintained a 3.28 grade-point average while serving on a number of campuswide committees. • The Mary Jane Gilhooly Award, given to the most outstanding graduating woman, will be presented to Mary Ann Richards of Berkeley, a candidate for a bachelors of arts degree in art studio and psychology. Richards received the award for her service and leadership in university and community activities as well as excellent scholarship. During her five years at UC Davis, Richards has earned a 3.81 grade-point average and is a member of five honor societies. • The Leon Mayhew Award, given by the College of Letters and Science, will be presented to Amy Beth Rose Mannila of Rancho Palos Verdes, a candidate for a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. Mannila has accumulated a 3.95 grade-point average through four years at UC Davis. A recipient of a Regents Scholarship, Mannila plans to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. • The Herbert A. Young Award, also given by the College of Letters and Science, will be presented to Nancy E. Heinschel of Concord. She is a candidate for a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. Heinschel has achieved a 3.99 grade-point average through the 1995 winter quarter. She has received 21 "A+" grades and 19 "A's" over four years. Heinschel plans on attending Stanford University in the fall to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics. In addition to the undergraduate awards, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has established the John E. Kinsella Memorial Prize, which will annually recognize a graduate student at the completion of his or her doctoral program and dissertation. The award will be presented on the basis of the quality of the individual's research in furthering the college's mission to serve the public in the areas of agriculture, environment, and human health and development. • The first Kinsella Memorial Prize has been awarded to Marie Weldon Taubeneck, a doctoral recipient from Adin, Calif. Taubeneck's research focused on identifying possible biological mechanisms that might cause malnutrition in the fetuses of well-nourished pregnant research animals. Her work suggested that a woman's risk for pregnancy complications might be strongly influenced by the amount of zinc in her diet. Planning a career in academic research, Taubeneck has begun a postdoctoral traineeship in toxicology through the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, at the Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
