As part of the campus's planning process for the next decade of growth, a team from Human Resources and Risk Management is looking at the long-term issues of staff recruitment and retention, campus job climate and staff diversity. The committee seeks comments from staff about those issues by April 7. Dennis Shimek, associate vice chancellor for human resources and risk management, asked for a report on the long-term issues facing staff employment to be submitted to Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Robert Grey by May 1. By that same day, the chancellor and provost are also scheduled to receive a asimilar study dealing with faculty recruitment, retention and campus climate at UC Davis. Concerns about the lag in hiring women and minorities among the UC Davis faculty prompted each school and college in October to form faculty advisory committees on the topic. In November a chancellor and pro-vost's advisory committee was selected to work with the advisory committees and propose how to improve the campus climate for women and minorities. The committees were to look at the best hiring practices at other universities and offer ideas how this campus could better its chances for gaining a more diverse faculty over the next decade as the campus grows to an estimated 30,000 to 31,000 students. The staff report will include information about staff workforce demographics and hiring and retirement trends. The Human Resources and Risk Management team will also offer a set of recommendations for increasing diversity among staff through recruitment and retention policies. The team has been gathering ideas from various campus constituency groups such as the Staff Affirmative Action and Diversity Advisory Committee, Staff Assembly and the Administrative Management Group.
