A collection of English abstracts of Spanish-language sustainable agriculture documents for farm workers, entry-level farmers and farm advisors or consultants is available from the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. Most of the 74 publications were chosen so that individuals with primary or secondary education can read them, says Gail Feenstra, SAREP food systems analyst and nutritionist who coordinated the project with editor Beatriz Cabezón. "Farm advisors and others who work with Spanish-speaking farmers and farm workers will be able to use these resources to do outreach and educational programs about sustainable farming practices," Feenstra says. The abstracts cover a wide range of topics, from the principles of sustainability to practical information about soil and water management, agricultural machinery, field safety, and learning English as a second language. SAREP has established libraries for the original Spanish documents at five sites in California including the Small Farm Center at UC Davis, the farm advisors' offices in San Diego and Fresno, UC Santa Barbara and the Rural Development Center in Salinas. A Spanish version of the abstracts is available on request.
