High-Tech Equipment Offers Environmentally Friendly Farming

What: Environmentally friendly farming calls not for a technological retreat, but a giant leap forward with highly sophisticated equipment, according to agricultural engineers at the University of California, Davis. Reporters are invited to view the latest in equipment designed to manage weeds and field crops with the minimum of chemical sprays. During an agricultural engineering field day for equipment dealers, manufacturers, regulatory officials and growers, reporters will be transported to three sites to view the machinery in action. When: Friday, Oct. 6 Media tour -- noon to 1 p.m. Industry demonstrations -- 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Where: Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, UC Davis Meet in the registration tent for escorted tour. Visuals: • The Synchronized Spraying System uses flow-control valves on each spray nozzle and boom pressure-regulating valves to independently control the flow rate and droplet size. Automatic drift reduction of chemical sprays in sensitive areas can therefore be achieved with the aid of a satellite global positioning system. • The "Smart" Herbicide Applicator uses a vehicle-mounted video camera and computer-controlled spray valves to apply herbicide only to weeds and not the ground surrounding them. The system contains a radar-based speed detector that allows the computer to efficiently apply herbicides at speeds up to 10 mph. • The Precision Crop Sprayer was developed to efficiently apply chemicals to row crops and not to the surrounding environment. Sprayer-mounted video cameras and an on-board computer "vision" system provide precise control of both spray nozzle location and the width of the spray band. The system ensures that the spray material is applied only to the crop plants. Directions From Interstate 80, take the UC Davis exit. Turn north on Old Davis and Parking: Road. Go past the information kiosk and at the stop sign turn right, still on Old Davis Road. At the first stop light, turn right onto Mrak Hall Drive. The parking lot is at the right and the Alumni and Visitor's Center is to the left. Reporters in unmarked vehicles should place a business card on the dashboard to park free of charge.
