The Society of American Florists honored UC Davis entomology department chair Michael Parrella with its 1997 Alex Laurie Award for Research and Education, crediting him with helping the industry reduce use of chemical pesticides. Parrella is an authority on using biological controls to manage insect pests in ornamental plants.
