Carole Joffe, UC Davis professor of sociology and women's studies, has received an Individual Project Fellowship from the Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation to investigate the possibilities of expanded access to abortion with new technologies that allow more people to provide the service. The Open Society Institute is a private foundation that encompasses a network of more than two dozen independent institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Haiti, South Africa and the United States. The institute was created and funded by international philanthropist George Soros.
