Horse Auction Is Final Test for Animal Science Students

What: While the rest of the campus grinds through final exams, a dozen students majoring in animal science face a test of another kind. As interns in Associate Professor Jan Roser's Equine Management Program, they are coordinating UC Davis' annual horse auction, featuring 14 registered and nonregistered foals and yearlings of thoroughbred, Arab and quarter horse breeds. The sale is the culmination of a program designed to complement the students' scientific training with hands-on experience and prepare them for careers in the horse industry or for veterinary school. Most of the students are women and some were "city kids" with little or no horse experience before coming to UC Davis. During their internships the students decide which mares and stallions to breed, care for the mares during pregnancy, deliver the foals, and coordinate overall training and health care for the herd. Proceeds from the sale help offset the expenses of the breeding program. When: Saturday, June 24, 6 p.m. Horse viewing begins at 2 p.m. Barbecue from 4:30 to 6 p.m. (Horses may also be viewed any weekday prior to the sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the horse barn.) Where: UC Davis Horse Barn and arena on La Rue Road (Park in visitor parking Lot 47 across the street.) Visuals: Approximately 100 buyers, from professional breeders to hobbyists, are expected for this traditional auction. Students will be preparing the horses in the barn for the sale, then showing each in the ring at auction time. Four of the foals are just three months old. This often is an emotional parting for the students and the "kids and babies" they have raised. Directions From Interstate 80, take the UC Davis exit. Turn north onto Old and Parking: Davis Road. Go through the stop sign and turn left onto La Rue Road. The horse barn and arena are about 1/4 mile ahead on the left. Free parking is available in visitor parking Lot 47, just beyond the arena on the right.
