Wild horses -- their behavior, biology and population management -- will be explored by researcher and guest speaker Jay F. Kirkpatrick during the 11th annual Horse Day Symposium to be held Saturday, Oct. 7, in the UC Davis Main Theatre. Kirkpatrick, director of the Deaconess Research Institute in Billings, Mont., is an internationally known authority on methods for controlling wild-horse populations. More than 400 horse fanciers, from hobbyists to professional breeders, are expected to attend the daylong symposium to hear a slate of horse experts discuss foal health, emergency medicine, shoeing, horse-feed labels and the feeding of older horses. At 3:30 p.m. in the Animal Science Horse Barn, Dr. Renee Golenz will demonstrate how horses should be examined by a veterinarian before they are purchased. The demonstration will be followed by a tour on campus of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and the California Center for Equine Health and Performance.
