A demonstration of alternative horse-training methods will highlight the 10th annual Horse Day to be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at UC Davis. Approximately 500 hobby-, pleasure- and sport-horse- owners are expected to attend the event, which will feature talks by veterinarians and horse experts. Subjects will include holistic equine medicine, use of vitamins and minerals, prevention of stress fractures and other injuries, foot care and breeding. The training demonstration will feature a method that emphasizes classical riding techniques in combination with exercises and use of the rider's hand to reduce tension and pain in the horse. The method is based on the assumption that most resistance during training and riding comes from tension, lack of balance or discomfort in the horse's body. The demonstration will be held at the UC Davis Equestrian Center and the remainder of the program will be held in the campus's Main Theatre. Saturday's Horse Day will be followed this year by a special Sunday workshop addressing the health and care of horses' legs, feet and hooves.
