The 1994 Excellence in Equine Research Award has been presented to UC Davis Associate Professor Sharon Spier by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Research. Spier's research led to the discovery of a DNA mutation causing the disease hyperkalemic periodic paralysis in horses. This is the first genetic disease in horses that can be diagnosed from samples of DNA using blood or hair samples.
