A demonstration of vaulting -- gymnastics on horseback -- will highlight the ninth annual Horse Day at UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 9. More than 600 amateur and professional horse fanciers will gather in Freeborn Hall for the daylong event featuring a variety of speakers from the UC Davis animal science department and School of Veterinary Medicine. Topics will include care of pregnant mares, proper nutrition for growing foals and use of a special sling for the helicopter rescue of trapped or injured horses. The vaulting demonstration will be presented at 3:45 p.m. in UC Davis' horse arena on La Rue Road by a Sacramento group called Moving Horse Central Valley Vaulters. Horse Day participants also will have the opportunity to tour the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and the Equine Research Laboratory at 4:30 p.m.
