Horse Professionals and Enthusiasts to Gather

Approximately 400 horse breeders, owners and enthusiasts are expected to gather Saturday, Sept. 13, at the University of California, Davis, for a daylong seminar featuring international authorities in various areas of equine science and medicine. "We're bringing together world leaders from all areas of equine research so that serious horse owners and professionals can have access to the most current information," said Janet Roser, a professor of animal science and seminar coordinator. The special equine seminar, sponsored by the UC Davis Department of Animal Science and Center for Equine Health, is both an educational and fund-raising event. Proceeds will be used to send young UC Davis faculty and staff researchers to the 7th International Symposium on Equine Reproduction, the premiere gathering of equine-reproduction experts. The conference, held every four years, will be in South Africa in 1998. The September equine seminar will feature veterinarians and equine scientists from UC Davis and throughout the United States. They will address a variety of practical concerns of horse breeders and owners, including proper nutrition for performance horses, reproductive issues and infectious diseases. Sue McDonnell, an internationally recognized equine behaviorist from the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss how the behavior of wild horses explains much of the instinctive behavior of domestic horses. Presentations will be offered in two sections, so that participants can attend the talks of greatest interest to them. Lunch will be provided, and the seminar will be followed by tours of equine-research facilities at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and Department of Animal Science. Registration fee for the equine seminar is $100 per person if received by Aug. 25 or $125 if received thereafter. More information and registration forms may be obtained by contacting Barbara Carolan, UC Davis Department of Animal Science, (916) 752-1250.
