One of the largest picnics in California will take place Saturday, April 20, when tens of thousands of people come to UC Davis for its annual Picnic Day. Opening ceremonies for the daylong campus open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the north end of the Quad, followed by a parade through the campus and downtown Davis. "Carrying the Torch" is the theme of this year's celebration. Among the highlights are a chemistry magic show, police dog agility demonstrations, sporting events, musical entertainment and departmental exhibits including a bug doctor that will diagnose plant ailments for the public. Picnic Day is organized by a 12-member student board of directors, led this year by Carmen Nugent. This 83rd annual open-house event gives the UC Davis campus an opportunity to showcase its accomplishments, according to Nugent.
