UC Davis students have a long tradition of participating in community service by helping those in need. Now the campuswide Human Corps program at UC Davis helps link all interested students to a data base that supplies interested volunteers with information on institutions and organizations where volunteers are needed. More than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students at UC Davis are now volunteering thousands of hours of community service annually to those needing help in Yolo County, according to Javier Avitia, Human Corps coordinator. In addition, students like Avitia are helping Mexican-American freshmen pay for their college costs by developing and maintaining a scholarship. "The money we raise is given to new students to supplement their first-quarter expenses, Avitia says. "The purpose of the scholarship is to help the student concentrate on the academic challenge of the first quarter without having to work."
