Tribal implementation of the Indian Child Welfare Act and possible solutions to current problems will be discussed during a daylong symposium Saturday, April 5, to be held at the UC Davis law school. Sponsored by the Native American Law Student Association, the symposium "Law and Social Welfare Policy" will begin at 9 a.m. with a prayer and a keynote address given by Mary Jane Risling, directing attorney for California Indian Legal Services. Panel discussions will include the topics of implementing the Indian Child Welfare Act and alternatives, pilot projects in Indian child welfare, and adult children of adoption. Those speaking are affiliated with such offices as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, California Indian Legal Services, and the California Department of Social Services. Speakers will discuss social workers' perspectives on the act and welfare reform. The symposium carries MCLE accreditation and will provide attorneys with 6 hours of credit. Those attending are asked to respond by April 1.
