Art Torres, chair of the California Democratic Party, will speak at the Political Campaign Management Institute at UC Davis July 16 to 18.
A state senator and assemblyman for 20 years, he will discuss California politics in the new millennium at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 16, at the University Club.
The 15th annual institute will draw some 85 political candidates and campaign workers -- from volunteers to managers -- to learn from a faculty of campaign veterans, political and fund-raising consultants, and members of the media.
Members of the media and political consultants will share their perspectives on California politics in the new millennium during two panel discussions at 12:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 17.
Thirteen other sessions will explore topics ranging from grassroots organizing and precinct analysis to the use of the Internet in political activism.
Ed Costantini, professor emeritus of political science at UC Davis and adviser to the institute, says term limits are opening up new opportunities for political hopefuls. He also says the next statewide election will be crucial because the winners will help determine how electoral districts are redrawn following next year's census.
All institute activities will take place at the University Club. To register, contact University Extension at (800) 752-0881.
