International Aids Society President to Speak

What: Dr. Mark A. Wainberg, an internationally recognized AIDS researcher and president of the International AIDS Society, will present two public seminars at the University of California, Davis. The first seminar, designed for a general audience, will address international challenges of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. The second will be a technical, research seminar related to development of vaccines made from a weakened HIV virus. He is particularly known for identifying "3TC" as an anti-HIV drug, in collaboration with BioChem Pharma in 1989. He has contributed significantly to the literature on drug action and discovery and is now studying novel concepts related to HIV vaccine development and prevention of HIV infection. He is a strong advocate of improved HIV prevention policies in developing countries. He will co-chair the March International Conference on HIV Microbicide in Washington, D.C. and chair the XV International AIDS Conference in Toronto in 2004. His presentations, sponsored by the UC Davis Center for Comparative Medicine, are part of the Murray B. Gardner Research Seminar Series. Directions and Parking: Take Interstate 80 to Highway 113 and drive north toward Woodland. Exit Highway 113 at Hutchison Drive. To get to Schalm Hall, turn right onto Hutchison Drive. At the first opportunity turn right onto Health Sciences Drive, then immediately left onto East Health Sciences Drive. To park free in Lot 54, place a media business card on your vehicle's dashboard. Schalm Hall is the single-story building south of the parking lot. To get to the California Regional Primate Research Center, turn left onto Hutchison Drive and continue until it ends at the primate center on the west side of County Road 98. Park free in front of the center and place a media business card on the dashboard of your vehicle.
